A crackdown on “phishing” scams has been announced by 15 of the top technology companies. Email providers such as Google and Microsoft will work with companies like Paypal and the Bank of America to improve authentication. Phishing attacks typically involve scammers posing as familiar companies in an attempt to trick users into sharing personal information. This co-ordinated effort aims to make this more difficult. Criminals are targeting internet users with a new gift certificate scam, according to security experts. Users receive an email that claims to be from Apple’s iTunes store, warns the Eleven security blog. The ZIP file attached contains malware that may allow hackers to gain access to the recipient’s computer. Hackers are alleged to have destroyed a pump used to pipe water to thousands of homes in a US city in Illinois. Hackers with access to the utility’s network are thought to have broken the pump by turning it on and off quickly. The FBI and Department for Homeland Security (DHS) are investigating the incident as details emerge of what could be a separate second attack. A clerk at an east London court who made legal history by becoming the first defendant to be convicted under new wide-ranging bribery legislation is due to be sentenced. A lack of understanding of cyber security issues is holding business leaders back from forming a sufficient strategy against cyber crime. Cyber criminals who are alleged to have made $14m (£9m) from advertising fraud have been arrested in Estonia. The FBI alleged that the gang infected more then four million computers in 100 countries with code that redirected users to online ads. The six arrested are Estonian nationals while the seventh member of the gang, a Russian, remains at large. Security firms hailed the arrests as the “biggest cyber criminal take down in history”. Companies in the US now have an obligation to publicly disclose details of data breaches they suffer, and there are increasing signs that the UK will have to implement similar rules under proposed changes to the EU Data Protection Directive.
