Dynamic debate at BCS

Gradian’s security experts recently delivered an absorbing presentation at the Berkshire branch of the British Computer Society (BCS). The team put forward the thought-provoking question “Do you really know who is who and what is where, online?”

To address the issue, the team looked at technologies such as account-based authentication through to data signing and transaction validation, which enable users to know exactly who they are interacting with. As well as these specific areas of authentication technology, the team also guided the audience through recent advances in identity management, data protection and encryption. The overall message of the session was how to deliver stronger authentication to consumers, and the very best methodology and techniques to adopt when doing so.

One area that sparked some debate on the topic of authentication concerned mobile devices. The audience generated a lively discussion on how best to use strong authentication on mobiles, and whether emotive device or hardware tokens best addressed and managed the problem.

In addition to the main discussion on authentication, our experts also discussed areas of data loss prevention, and how to safely use e-mail, described by one attendee as “the biggest threat” to businesses.  This was one area that sparked some great interaction, especially given the number of data leakage stories that we see in the media at the moment. Another area of debate around email concerned regulation and compliance. The audience shared thoughts about how advanced organisations actually are and whether this falls short of how compliant they should be.
