Tougher data rules for Whitehall

Tougher rules aimed at keeping people’s personal records private are to be introduced in government departments.

Civil service chief Sir Gus O’Donnell said there had to be a “fundamental change in culture” among staff handling people’s personal information.

There have been a variety of cases where confidential information has been lost or stolen.

Several laptops containing sensitive data have gone missing and files marked Top Secret have been left on a commuter train.

A break-in at Middlesbrough Council has resulted in the loss of nine laptops containing sensitive case files on up to 63 vulnerable children.
